Stone craving is a kind of folk art based on the material of stone, gravel, granite, marble and other materials, while the works from Shawan are mainly made of gravel, and granite. The stone carving art has got a long history in China, with its exquisite skills, high artistic value, practical and decorative functions, so do the folk works from Shawan. The contents of Shawan folk stone carvings are mainly realistic figures, animals, flowers and birds, and applied into many parts on the construction, such as civil construction roof beam, Lions Gate, drum-shaped stone blocks, door pillowed stone, bridge, stone arches, e.g. such as Bao Mo Garden’s railings, stone bridge, and in San Shan’s Turtle Mountain Temple, its stone lions, all of which have the rich folk characteristics of Lingnan.
