It is drawn from the folk legend. A handsome young scholar came all the way to Beijing for imperial examination but was stopped by a cluster of girls in the Women’s Island. Luckily a turtle showed up to save the young man from the struggle and helped him get through the vast ocean. Later the young guy got the first place in the imperial examination, and granted as Scholar Star. On the way back to his hometown, he found the turtle and expressed his appreciation for its kindness and help from difficulty. The scholar hanged the red and yellow imperial statements on the turtle’s neck. After the turtle knew he got the first place, it had him stand on its head and danced with itself joyfully. That’s how the idiom Taking the Head of the Turtle originated from the story.
