He Binglin (1918-2007) was the hero behind the scenes of China's first atomic bomb development, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Polymer chemistry experts, China ion exchange resin industry pioneer, the Principal of Polymer Chemistry Research Institute in Nankai University.

In 1947 He Binglin went to study at Southern California University Research Institute and Indiana University Institute in America. He worked while studying. After four years hard work and diligence, he got the Doctor degree in 1952. In the autumn of 1951, the America government launched a seized policy for Chinese overseas students that all students studying science, engineering, agriculture, medicine were not allowed to return China. Under such conditions, he worked in U. S. Nalco chemical company, studying pesticide and medicines treated by water. He believed these kinds of knowledge and techniques would help a lot on Chinese construction, later considering that China had to develop atomic energy industry, and changed to study on exchange resin. His talents and outstanding achievements was recognized by his company, and promoted as Second Researcher.

The working and living conditions were very superior in America, but He was always missing his home country. While working, he ran around to lobby the America government with over ten overseas Chinese students by submitting returning Chinese applications to allow them go back China. The He¡¯s couple with over ten overseas students also wrote to Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai on that. In 1954, Premier Zhou Enlai went to negotiate with his Chinese delegation in Geneva, and the American Secretary Dulles denied that at beginning. After Zhou took out He Binglin¡¯s letter, the American delegations were speechless, and agreed to let them return China in 1955. In February of 1956, He Binglin and his wife returned to China since they left their home country ten years ago. He was highly welcome by his professor Yang Shixian in his alma mater Nan Kai University. After two years teaching in organic chemistry department, he achieved outstanding contributions on pesticide and ion exchange resin aspects. In 1958, He Binglin established the Polymer Research Faculty and took up the role as the Director of it. After several years, he continuously made new achievements and was being recognized by all aspects. During the ten years of catastrophe, he had to stop the teaching and scientific research work. In 1980s, he obtained unprecedented developments on the business. In 1980 he served as a director in the Department of chemistry, Nankai University. In the same year he was named National Model Workers, and elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences Faculty Member (Academician). In 1981, he concurrently served as the Chief of the being built Molecular Biology Research Institute. In 1982, he was promoted as the Principle of the Polymer Chemistry Research which was extended from the former Polymer Chemistry Research Department. In 1986 the Nan Kai University Chemistry Industry was combined into Polymer Chemistry Research, which realized that the research had its own industry and promoted the production of the chemical plant production and the polymer chemistry research teaching, scientific research development. In 1985 the State Education Commission designated Nankai University and Tianjin University to support the establishment of the new Qiingdao University, He Binglin served as the first president of the Qingdao University.
