He Shaoxia (1894 - 1942), named Zhen Qu (or Zhen Qi), Zi Qian Diao, came from Ya Zhong Fang county (now named Shawan Bei Cun village), Shawan Town, whose great grand farther He Huiyan and grand farther He Juxuan (Hou Kou), was the magistrate in Bao Ying county. His brother graduated from Guangdong Higher Politics and Law School, once working in Peasant Revolution Regime Government of Hai Feng County organized by Peng Pai, later on being haired as the county magistrate in Xu Wen county as a lawyer. Being trained in Huang Pu Military School, his younger brother later attended Anti-Japanese Invasion War in 1937, and being a teacher in a primary school until he retired.

He Shaoxia was born in a well-educated family, and studied in Guangzhou Jiao Zhou Middle School. He was open minded due to experiencing the 4th May Movement. He was not only good at Canton music, but also skillful at playing many kinds of instruments, such as Pipa, San Xian (three stringed instruments), as well as composed music and compiled songs for opera actresses.

After returning hometown, besides teaching in Ben Shan Primary School, and later De Ming Primary School, Shawan Middle School (the previous Xiang Xian Middle School), he continuously discussed Canton music on playing, composition and critics with his long distant relative¡ªHe Liutang, He Yu¡¯nian, He Shaoxia. On the aspect of playing, He Shaoyu and his Pipa playing were considered as the best by the county people. Most of the time, being the government officer outside the county, the Pipa playing by He Shao¡¯yu was not that famous, so He Shaoxia got the reputation as Pipa Fairy.

At the end of 1920s, He Shaoxia had close relationship with Canton musicians, such as Lv Wencheng, Yin Zizhong, He Dasha, and western music composer He Andong. They often came to visit him in Shawan, as well as the famous Canton Opera artists who often came to consult him on the folk arts, and invited him to play the music for their performance. Zhang Yue¡¯er was one of the Ping Hou style singers, whose famous songs were Traveler¡¯s Grieving for Autumn, The Artist.

To mourn the death of the famous movie star Ruan Lingyu, He Shaoxia ingeniously composed a Cantonese Opera song The Artist with the movies¡¯ names in which Miss Ruan had participated. Zhang¡¯s singing expressed the genuine pain and sadness, was very popular among the fans.

Uncle Shiqian was the manager of "New Moon" record company, famous as playing saxophone. Lv Wencheng was good at playing Er Hu and singing Zi Hou, Yin Zizhong playing violin, He Dasha jazz drum, who were praised as Four Kings. In 1930s, they often invited He Shaoxia to Shanghai and recorded many Canton music albums together with his playing Pipa, which including the works of He Liutang, He Yu¡¯nian and He Shaoxia.

He Shaoxia was one of the important Canton music and opera composers, with lots of works, such as the Sunset in Lei Feng Tower, Lv Gong Playing Water Games, Xia li Ba Ren(a kind of folk song originating from Chu Nation, in War Era) , The weak Willow Trees in the Wind, The Scenic Willow Trees in the End of the Pathway, Rainbow and Garments Dance, Bai Tou Yin (literally the white hair lady groaning, also the name of ancient Chinese song for court entertainment in Hahn and Jihn Dynasty), The bees and butterflies in Spring. He had created a lot of canton opera songs for the four Ping Hou singers, like Zhang Yue¡¯er, Xu Liuxian. So far, the two pieces can be identified as his works, i.e.Traveler¡¯s Grieving for Autumn, The Artist, and the one Awakening in Red Mansion (co-composed by He Netian and Deng Feng, sung by Xu Liuxian), others still pending to be clarified. At that time, no matter the canton music or the canton opera songs they were created to entertain themselves only, no commercial interests related, and the composers did not care about the originated rights, so later it was difficult to trace back the authentic composers.

During the period of national crisis and his hometown being occupied, He Shaoxia taught in a primary school and earned two baskets of rice as monthly salary to support his family with eight members. In his later years, he resented the miserable life for his broken country and homeless countrymen, and created two famous songs Bai Tou Yin and Silent Night to express his sadness, which also caused massive strong resonance. At last, he died of the illness and poverty.
